Anomalist to tease Johor audiences with ‘Asmara Malam Halloween’ well ahead of ‘K3’ premiere

YOUTH theatre company has gone many places barely two years into the scene. On top of well-attended stagings, the team received a BOH Cameronian Arts Awards for Bangsa, made Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC)‘s D’Next Artist Project with Hotel, and was invited to present Home in Singapore through the Causeway Exchange program.

Anomalist is currently hard at work to present its upcoming anthology of short theatre pieces, K3, due to open at in December. But in advance of its full run, the team will be teasing audiences with a sneak preview of the anthology at Puteri Harbour exclusively for Iskarnival Sama Sama.

One of four plays from K3, Asmara Malam Halloween, will debut on the festival’s Cultural Stage on 12 November 2016. Written by Nell Hannan, the short play deals with themes of romance, discovery and self-acceptance.

Asmara Malam Halloween revolves around a female scarecrow who has lost her ability to scare birds away. Rooted to her spot, she is instead often bullied by them. But Halloween comes around and she gains the opportunity to roam as a human being. While wandering through the city, she comes across a zombie who accepts her for who she is.

The short play is set to star Nabil Zakaria (Titus Andronicus, Bangsa) and Jiamin with an ensemble comprising Han Zalini, Nave VJ and Khairi Anwar.

Iskarnival Sama Sama meanwhile is the last of three editions of Johorean arts and culture festival  held this year. In conjunction with the tenth anniversary of Iskandar Malaysia, organisers have split the festival into three editions to be held across three consecutive months — Iskarnival Kreatif was held from 17-18 September while Iskarnival Naratif was held from 15-16 October.

Taking place in Puteri Harbour, Nusajaya, Iskarnival Sama Sama will run from 12-13 November and provide opportunity to over 1,100 creatives to share their works with the public. Other acts performing at the festival this weekend include Indonesian rockers The Sigit, popular local band Oh Chentaku, Short+Sweet Malaysia winners Farah Kamsari and Asmaraloka, theatre collective The Lighters, and local ska-punk outfit Johnny Comes Lately.

Iskarnival is presented by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, UEM Sunrise Berhad and Iskandar Investment Berhad with support from Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), the state government of Johor, and the Johor Bahru city council.
