Tragicomedy of Errors was staged last week at Pentas 1, klpac, and presented by Pentas Project. Seeing the title, I was expecting an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, but that was not entirely the case. Tragicomedy of Errors was more of a restaging of a 1986 play titled “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land”, written by a renown Taiwanese playwright-director, Stan Lai. While the bard’s play involves the switching of two sets of twins, Tragicomedy of Errors centers around two groups of theatre production that have to share a stage because of a booking error. By now, many in the performing arts scene would have known of the name Ridhwan Saidi. He had staged 3 of his Teater Modular series (the final one I reviewed here), and recently staged his second Teater Normcore, “Stereo Genmai”. If you have known him as a novelist previously, Stereo Genmai was one of his novels. He adapted it into a two act play for Teater Normcore, and it was staged in Kotak, Five Arts Centre last week.
The Fall of the House of the Usher was presented by theatrethreesixty as part of their #wearetheathreesixty2018, a 6 weeks compilation series with 3 intimate plays to celebrate the birth of Malaysia Baru. The script was adapted by Tarrant Kwok, based on the original famous short story by Edgar Allen Poe. It is also directed by Nicole-Ann Thomas, who previously directed The Pillowman and Bare Beckett, so YEAH… That should give you a hint of what the show looks like.
Over the last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the screening of the works of students from the Faculty of Cinematic Arts of Multimedia University Malaysia (FCA MMU). Presented grandly in the halls of GSC Pavillion, the film screening showcased 18 notable works from graduated students of the past few semesters (or cycles, as they call it).
