Fahmi Reza’s Images of “Evil Clown Najib” Reaches BBC
AFTER Australian media showed ver the acquittal of prime minister Najib Razak from the 1MBD scandal, it seems that the rest of the world is starting to come on board. The BBC on Wednesday reported #kitasemuapenghasut, a social media movement which sprouted inadvertently from the government’s attempt at clamping down on public dissent.
Authorities warned social activist and visual artist Fahmi Reza that his Twitter account was under surveillance for posting an image of Najib Razak as a clown, more netizens became aware of the move and sided with Fahmi.
The hashtag #kitasemuapenghasut, initially used by Fahmi for his clown-faced Najib images, has since grown popular on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. Art collective Grupa has since joined the cause, too, prompting for a bigger influx of evil clown Najib images on the internet.
Despite authorities hoping to quell disapproval against the ruling coalition, more hopped onto #kitasemuapenghasut and social media platforms have been slowly filling up with images of the prime minister and his aides as evil, garish beings.
Even before further action has been taken against Fahmi, supporters have rallied with a series of posters requesting solidarity for the social activist. Fahmi acknowledged the humor behind this, stating that he might be the first person in Malaysia to receive calls for solidarity even before incarceration.
