Festival Filem Indonesia: Best Short Goes To Lucky Kuswandi!

LAST night, Festival Filem Indonesia was held in the Banten province of Java. Contributions and achievements in Indonesian cinema were recognised at the prestigious event, which saw the Filem Pendek Terbaik award going to The Fox Exploits The Tiger’s Might.

First premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year as part of the official Semaine de la Critique line-up, The Fox Exploits The Tiger’s Might is a 25-minute film which tells the story of two preteen boys who “discover their sexuality and the relation between power and sex in the awkward setting of a sleepy small town with a military base”.

The film contains suggestive images, sexual symbolism and a homosexual teenage protagonist, and is a dramatic period piece set in Indonesia. It stars visual artist Atrey Moniaga and actor Kemas Fauzan, with Surya Saputra in a guest role — read more about the film in our piece from back in May.

Produced by Babibuta Films, the short was directed by young Indonesian director Lucky Kuswandi, known for Selamat Pagi Malam and Madame X.

On top of being officially selected for Cannes, The Fox Exploits The Tiger’s Might has also been nominated for a Sony CineAlta Discovery Award, a Canal+ Award and a Queer Palm Award.

First held in 1955, Festival Filem Indonesia has run for 36 years. It’s highest award is the coveted Filem Bioskop Terbaik, which went to black and white film Siti this year.
