FFM27: Who Wore It Best – Best Costume Design
It’s time to take a look at the Best Costume Designer nominees at the 27th Film Festival Malaysia (FFM27)! The awards ceremony, due on the 5th of September, will see top honours in the film industry handed out to several filmmakers and actors, and we’re here to talk about some very talented potential winners.
Most people take costumes for granted when it really is quite vital in the cinematic world. Here’s what clothesonfilm had to say about the costuming world:
So now that there’s a clearer picture as to why costumes are important, we present the nominees of the movies that had the Best Costumes…
Apokalips X
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
Verdict: Apokalips X revolves around a rival of gangs who are in war for the sake of pride and ego in a world that has been destroyed by a chemical warfare. Apokalips X is pretty much almost like Mad Max. As said before, films can be read through costumes, however in Apokalips X it was tad bit disappointing. Costumes looked like they belonged to an emo goth band instead. But we give them credit for the creativity of extra add on accessories that made them look a little more “bad ass”.
Lelaki Harapan Dunia
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Verdict: Religion, culture and tradition, nothing could ever go wrong with costumes when it comes to it. Malaysians are fairly strict when it comes to abiding by traditional wear or respecting a religious way of dressing. Lelaki Harapan Dunia had it simple with just baju kurungs and sarongs – which really gives you the authentic kampong vibe.
Kami Histeria
Genre: Comedy, Horror
Verdict: Young, trendy, urban and current. Since the movie revolves an all-female band… and a langsuir, costumes were basic and suited every role of every character. What stood out though was Fazura’s picks of the Baju Kebaya’s which were stunning.
Manisnya Cinta Di Cappadocia
Genre: Drama
Verdict: Scenes when Ifti (also played by Nur Fazura) and her co-worker, played by Rafidah Abdullah were in Cappadocia–Turkey–costumes were beautiful and colorful. Blending in with the colours of the architectures in Cappadocia, costume designers knew how to make scenes look stunning as it already is that enhanced the movie.
Hungry Ghost Ritual
Genre: Horror
Verdict: There should never be an over the top costume for a horror movie. Never. Hungry Ghost Ritual kept it plain and simple. During the Chinese Opera scenes though—always colorful and always a delight to see, definitely not a disappointment
The Daily Seni’s Choice
Though the verdict for The Daily Seni’s choice may be a short one, we’d say that the award should go to Manisnya Cinta Di Cappodacia. With its vibrant colours that suited characters as well as the environment, it made many of the scenes pleasing to watch. Costume designers looked like they did their share of research on not only characters but where scenes took place which was an effort we think that was worth taking.
