ILHAM CONTEMPORARY FORUM (MALAYSIA 2009 – 2017) 21 May 2017 - 8 October 2017 Level 5 / Tingkat 5 Curatorial Tour / Lawatan Bersama Kurator: 21 May, 11am -- ILHAM Contemporary Forum is a project exhibition which aims to explore what is currently happening in Malaysian arts and culture. Collaborative by nature, ILHAM has invited seven project curators — a range of professionals from various fields and positions, all under 39 — to select visual artworks and cultural projects, produced within the last eight years. This selection of over 35 artworks and cultural projects will be included in the Contemporary Forum exhibition. The exhibition will serve as a prompt (rather than a survey exhibition) to discuss and debate what has been happening over the last few years in the local arts and cultural scene. The seven guest project curators are Kat Rahmat, Mark Teh, Ridhwan Saidi, Ong Jo-Lene, Tan Hui Koon, chi too and Azzad Diah Ahmad Zabidi. The exhibition is facilitated by Gallery Director, Rahel Joseph, and guest facilitator, Lee Weng Choy. This exhibition is a pilot project which may become a regular platform for ILHAM. The Contemporary Forum aims to be an experiment and to ask questions. It is a series of enquiries from the ground level — lateral conversation between different voices. This exhibition will be a starting point for other activities, from public forums to workshops, which will further explore what is contemporary art and culture in Malaysia today. After the public forums and workshops, ILHAM will produce a publication documenting the processes and the activities of The Contemporary Forum. CURATORIAL TOUR Gallery tour highlighting key works from the exhibition ILHAM CONTEMPORARY FORUM. 21 May, 11am -- PAMERAN THE ILHAM CONTEMPORARY PROJECT MALAYSIA 2009 – 2017 The ILHAM Contemporary Forum, adalah sebuah projek terbaru dari Galeri ILHAM dengan pendekatan eksperimen meneroka dunia seni dan kebudayaan Malaysia, hasil gabungan professional jemputan dari pelbagai bidang dan jawatan, kesemuanya berumur di bawah 39 tahun, menghasilkan sebuah pameran seni. ILHAM telah memilih tujuh kurator projek iaitu Kat Rahmat, Mark Teh, Ridhwan Saidi, Ong Jo-Lene, Tan Hui Koon, chi too dan Azzad Diah Ahmad Zabidi yang ditugaskan untuk mengenal pasti lima karya seni atau projek budaya yang telah dihasilkan di dalam lingkungan lapan tahun kebelakangan ini (“projek budaya” termasuk filem, fesyen, persembahan, komik, rekaan dan sebagainya). Pameran ini akan dikelolakan oleh Pengarah Galeri, Rahel Joseph, dan pengelola jemputan, Lee Weng Choy. Pameran ini tidak bermaksud menjadi sebuah tinjauan aliran kontemporari, namun bertujuan untuk membuka ruangan debat dan perbincangan terhadap perkara-perkara yang berlaku di dalam dunia kesenian dan kebudayaan tempatan. Selain itu juga, ILHAM Contemporary Forum menggunakan pameran sebagai batu loncatan untuk mengembangkan lagi aktiviti-aktiviti seterusnya, dari forum umum sehingga bengkel, yang diharapkan dapat menjana lebih banyak lagi persoalan dan kajian terhadap dunia seni dan budaya Malaysia. Sebagai kesimpulan kepada pameran, forum dan bengkel yang diadakan, ILHAM akan menerbitkan sebuah buku yang mendokumentasikan segala proses dan aktiviti keseluruhan projek ini. The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM), Kuala Lumpur, is pleased to present our upcoming photography exhibition entitled "A Spiritual Journey: Islamic Culture and Heritage in Southeast Asia” which will be on display from 14th July until 14th October 2017. This exhibition showcases photographs selected from the many that were submitted to the IAMM's inaugural photography competition. This initiative seeks to inspire creativity among photographers as well as to document the visual appeal of Islam in Southeast Asia.  More than 120 photographers have submitted their work. This diverse pool of talent is not only from Malaysia but also from Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, France, Germany and United Kingdom. At a special ceremony on the opening day, the winners of three Grand Prizes totalling MYR 10,000 will be announced.

Malaysian prodigy and piano virtuoso, Tengku Irfan, returns to Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) for the second time this year to present dazzling concerts with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO).

After enthralling audience with his brilliant improvisation of ‘cadenzas’ in his début concerts with the MPO in 2009, Irfan has soared high and achieved the impossible; he became a prize winner at the Aspen Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.2 Competition, the ASCAP Charlotte Bergen and ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer awards, and has collaborated with orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony, Sao Paulo State Youth Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra and Estonian National Symphony.

Classical music luminaries that have performed with him includes Neeme Järvi, Nikolai Alexeev, Evan Rogister, Claudio Cruz and Darrell Ang.

This will be Irfan’s tenth collaboration with the MPO after their performances on the DFP stage in 2009, 2011 (twice), 2013, 2015 and 2016, and tours to Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in 2013. The MPO premiered his award-winning composition Sahibul Hikayat Fantasy Overture at DFP. His orchestral piece, Keraian, was premiered by the New York Philharmonic and his choral piece, Tragedi Dewi Suria, was premiered by the New York Virtuoso Singers. Kristjan Järvi and the MDR Sinfonieorchester commissioned Irfan to compose Vivacity premiered at the Leipzig Gewandhaus last year.

In 2015, Irfan made his conducting debut with the MusicNova Orchestra for the premiere of his string orchestral work, Nocturne. He conducted the premiere of his work, Pengembaraan Minda dan Kenyataan at the Lincoln Center, New York.

Described by The New York Times as ‘eminently cultured’ and possessing ‘sheer incisiveness and power’, the 19-year-old artist studies at The Juilliard School with a double major in Piano and Composition.

Irfan’s upcoming collaboration with the MPO are scheduled on Saturday, 30 September 2017 at 8.30 pm and Sunday, 1 October 2017 at 3.00 pm. He will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5, a grandeur work nicknamed ‘Emperor’. This is the last of Beethoven’s five piano concertos, premiered in Leipzig, Germany, in 1811.

The MPO will also perform a Malaysian work entitled Mercu Kegemilangan composed by Vivian Chua, fusing Malaysian themes with the Western classical form and harmony. Similarly, another work listed in the repertoire, Toru Takemitsu’s Requiem for String Orchestra, synthesizes both Western and oriental esthetics and techniques.

All concerts will be led by Naohisa Furusawa.

With billions of images being made and shared digitally every day, and photographic equipment increasingly reliant on software and computing power, are traditional image-making methods still relevant? In conjunction with No Man's Land, an Antarctic photography exhibition currently hosted in Balai Seni Negara (BSN), artists Mahen Bala, Jeffrey Lim and Dr. Azril Ismail are conducting a workshop and sharing session on analogue photography. PROGRAMME All three of Obsolete(?)'s photographers work with different mediums. Each will be sharing insights into their work and how their chosen processes play a part in guiding their artistic process. Each session will end with a simple demonstration by the artist. 0930: Registration 1000: Opening Remarks from YPASM, BSN and MyCreative 1030: Obsolete(?): A conversation on analog image-making processes in a digital world 1230: Lunch Mahen Bala will start the session with a short presentation on the extreme challenges faced by the early photographers in Antarctica and how their works have survived the century and is being revisited today. K. Azril Ismail will be sharing his experience in 19th century photographic processes. He will demonstrate the many steps that fo into making a wet plate using collodion. Jeffrey Lim will be demonstrating how 'anything' can be turned into a camera, provided the practitioner has a full grasp of the fundamental principles of light, optics and photo-chemistry.
