Who is Rashid? Why Should We Be Like Him?

by Maira ZamriJanuary 15, 2016

IT’S almost as if he appeared out of nowhere! Yesterday, meme and hashtag Jadilah Seperti Rashid was trending on Twitter and Facebook — it’s really just the Malaysian version of #BeLikeBill that originated online back in 2015.

In the local version of the meme, Rashid shares similarities with Bill, serving almost as role models.

Rashid is the perfect Malaysian. A law abiding, intellectual and rational citizen. Someone we should all aspire to be.

But what would a Malaysian spin-off of things be if we didn’t use it to put other people down? Some people also took to Rashid to express their frustrations on various topics.

A version of Rashid is also going to Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre‘s Marble Hearts, starring Marina Tan, Safia Hanifah and Christina Orow.

The original meme, Be Like Bill, was used by netizens to enforce online ethics. The Malaysian version however evolved into a cynical way to tegur people, kinda like what elders love doing. Menyakat.

Reaction to the meme was mixed — some saw it as annoying and unoriginal, some joined in on the fun and made their own edits; others just watched from the sidelines.

Here’s what Malaysians on Twitter had to say about the whole situation.

Rashid’s created a pretty big impact on Twitter. Media company The Hyper Media uploaded a  titled Jadilah Seperti Rashid; even Khairy JamaluddinMinister of Youth and Sports, weighed in on the trend.

As of 1.22pm of January 14th, hundreds of thousands of #JadilahSepertiRashid tweets have been sent out.

We have a feeling that the Rashid fever won’t wear down anytime soon, so be prepared to see more of Rashid on your social media feeds.
