Heard about that one designer who shook the fashion world by serving hijabs on NYFW’s runway?
INDONESIAN designer Anniesa Hasibuan recently created a spark in the fashion world during New York Fashion Week as the first designer to present her collection with hijabs.
The 30-years old designer first dabbled with fashion design as a hobby because she constantly needed clothes that will make her look neat during meetings with clients since she started as a business woman. She then began designing work clothes as well as formal clothes for herself, but she didn’t expect her friends and clients to gush over her designs.
They even encouraged her to open up her own boutique so they can get her clothes for themselves. So in 2015, she opened her first boutique and also presented her first collection in London.
Anniesa’s designs instantly gained a following for their modest aesthetics but elaborate details and luxurious silhouettes. She has dressed a number of big names including Indonesian singer Fitri Carlina, Miss Universe Indonesia 2013 Whulandry Herman, and Haute Hijab’s Melanie to name a few.
Her collection for NYFW introduced her ready-to-wear line to appeal to a larger audience. However, she left a mark with her Spring 2017 RTW Collection — D’Jakarta is inspired by the cultural uniqueness and diverse backgrounds from her hometown.
“I want to bring the Indonesian name to the fashion world, and use my clothes to introduce people to the different and diverse parts of Indonesia,” Anniesa told The Jakarta Post.
The collection itself was mesmerising. Her models walked down the runway in shimmering silks, vibrant colours, intricate shapes, and eye-catching hijabs included with every look in the collection.
“I am trying to show the world that you can express yourself and your passion for fashion while wearing your hijab and adhering to your religious values. That doesn’t mean you can’t be elegant and comfortable with yourself,” Anniesa Hasibuan for Fashion Reverie.
Anniesa doubted herself before she decided to hop on the NYFW train but after the heartfelt response she received during Istanbul Modest Fashion Week, she came up with 48 pieces for her D’Jakarta collection: 38 ready-to-wear and 10 evening gowns.
Since early 2015, Anniesa has worked relentlessly to build her own fashion empire and to get to where she is now. Anniesa was awarded Best Fashion Designer during Cannes Red Carpet Fashion and Film Awards in May 2016 for her Pearl Asia collection shown for the first time during Couture Fashion Week New York in February.
That’s all for now, but let’s hope that more designers like Anniesa will be able to pave their way into fashion week to show the diversity of modest fashion!
