Poet X is a poetry podcast where poets can digitally publish their works in anonymity. They are the latest entry into the burgeoning spoken word scene in KL, providing a platform to help new young poets get their work out to the public minus the fear of stage fright and literary criticism.
They are tight-knit outfit made up of spoken word poet Azam Rais (director), audio engineer Safwan Siddiq (producer) and graphic designer Farah Hanis (designer).
Last year, I went to a poetry night hosted by a university student body. I recited my first ever spoken-word piece a way to say goodbye to a girl I shared love with. Cliche as it was, I never regretted that decision of performing. That wasn’t my first time attending a poetry recital. Prior to that I was beginning to frequent If Walls Could Talk, a monthly poetry open mic at Gaslight Cafe. Before all of this however, my earliest exposure of poetry or spoken word is from the pages of books or YouTube videos. I was completely oblivious to a scene that was growing.
HEARD of spoken word open mic collective If Walls Could Talk? These guys frequently host poetry readings at Gaslight Café & Music which see strong response from performers and audiences of Kuala Lumpur’s spoken word scene, and they also recently celebrated their one year anniversary.
So it’s time for another installment of Art For Grabs! If you’ve been to one of these things you’ll know it’s a pretty decent place to get handcrafted local stuff, speak to interesting people and gain useful information. Each episode however comes with something new, and this one’s no exception.
